Leghorns Park at 690 Sonoma Mountain Parkway is one of the most-used parks in Petaluma: an expansive playground with multi-age play sections, a reservable shaded group picnic area, BBQ pits, and sports courts. It is the easy answer for a birthday picnic or a long Saturday morning of play.

Kenilworth Park is the easy neighborhood stop: a playground, picnic tables, a BBQ pit, and open grass for running around. The city groups it with its community parks, and it is close enough to the east-side neighborhoods to be a walk-to park for many families.

Prince Park is the west-side hub for youth sports: the Petaluma Youth Soccer League and Petaluma Girls' Softball play their home seasons on its fields. Beyond the diamonds there is room to run, which makes it both a game-day venue and a plain weekend park.

Pioneer Park at 1007 Simmons Lane is the city's most popular park, and its two renovated play structures include the first adaptive and inclusive playground in Marin County: a tot lot for ages 2-5, a larger structure for ages 5-12, rubberized surfacing, and shade umbrellas. Add four lighted tennis courts, picnic areas, lawns, and the band shell, and it is the full package.

A transportation-themed playground built for ages 2 to 5.
Olive Tot Lot at 2 Elmwood Court was freshly renovated into a transportation-themed playground perfectly sized for toddlers and preschoolers: a little race track, a play bus, and small climbing elements, all in a quiet neighborhood setting. It is the go-to for the youngest Novato crowd.

Miwok Park at 2200 Novato Boulevard is a favorite community park: a large lawn for picnics and pick-up games, picnic tables, and grounds that sit next to the Novato History Museum complex. It pairs nicely with a museum visit for a half-day outing.

Hill Recreation Area at 1560 Hill Road is a 12-acre park with a synthetic turf field, a grass field, pickleball and bocce courts, set right next to the Hill Gymnasium and the Margaret Todd Senior Center. It is where family sports programs and casual matches happen in east Novato.

Stafford Lake County Park, just north of Novato, is a family favorite for bigger kids: an adventure playground, an 18-hole disc golf course, a mountain bike park, shore fishing, and picnic areas with a hammock village. It feels like a day trip without really leaving town.

Novato
A flat, level wetland loop that strollers and little legs manage.
Rush Creek sits off the San Marin Drive exit on the east side of 101, and its roughly three-mile loop around the wetlands stays flat the whole way. It is the Novato family's accessible nature walk: easy footing, great birdwatching along Rush Creek and the bay, and short enough to pair with a playground visit.

Mount Burdell is the big open space on Novato's west side, and its wide, gently graded fire roads are stroller friendly for quite a ways up. Spring brings wildflower displays, and the views over the bay grow with every turn. Rangers warn that the Old Quarry Trail is the steepest route in the Marin district, so skip it with young kids and keep to the lower fire roads instead.
Petaluma
The town's own regional park: six easy miles of rolling trails.
Helen Putnam Regional Park off Chileno Valley Road is 216 acres of grassy hillsides and oak woodland with about six miles of easy, rolling trails, a playground, picnic areas, and accessible paths near the trailhead. It is the classic first-hike park for Petaluma kids, close enough to be a weekday after-school outing.

Tolay Lake is the largest Sonoma County regional park at 3,434 acres, about eight miles southeast of Petaluma on Cannon Lane. The lower lakeside paths stay flat and open, an easy walk for families, while the ridgetop trails climb to sweeping views of San Pablo Bay for when the kids are ready for more.

East Petaluma anchors the town's baseball heart at Murphy Field, the swim center's lanes and lesson programs, and a healthy run of dance and gymnastics studios on this side of the 101. A lot of Petaluma clubs serve families from every corner of town, so if your sport is not under this heading, check the West Petaluma block below it.
Little League baseball, T-Ball through Junior and Senior, ages 4 to 16.
Petaluma Valley Little League is a charter member of the Little League organization that has run youth baseball since the early 1970s. Teams play out of Murphy Field on the east side of town, and the league covers everything from T-Ball up through Intermediate 50/70, Junior, and Senior divisions. Spring 2027 player registration opens in November 2026, the same window the league has used every season, and it lists its free-try clinics and volunteer coach slots the same way as opening day nears. Petaluma American, Petaluma National, and Petaluma Valley Little Leagues round out the town's baseball options across the city.

AC Swim Club's Petaluma team practices at the Petaluma Swim Center and is the city's full-time USA Swimming club. New swimmers start by trying out and placing into the right practice group, and the season runs year-round through the fall, winter, and summer competitive schedule. The St. Vincent de Paul parish youth basketball league gives grade-school and middle-school players a home season at the schools of central Petaluma. The 2026-27 season registration is the one to watch this fall, as the league posts its dates on the registration page and opens sign-ups before the winter season tips off. Play is broken down by grade level rather than travel-club tryouts, a laid-back way to get a first season of organized hoops.
Teams, clubs, and city programs in this part of town
West Petaluma runs from historic downtown out toward the river and the hills, and its kid life centers on the Prince Park fields, the McDowell corridor, and the sidewalks near the water. The youth soccer and youth softball leagues play their home seasons here, and the west side also holds the biggest cluster of ballet, arts, and gym classes in town.

For a bump up from recreational play, the club path out of Petaluma runs through North Coast Futbol Club at the higher level.

The Boys & Girls Clubhouse at Lucchesi Park runs one of the city's busiest youth sports operations: registration is open for the winter programs, including a grades 3-9 winter basketball league, a K-2 basketball clinic, and a grades 2-6 indoor soccer clinic. Club membership keeps activity fees low, financial aid is available, and the club's before- and after-school programs make it one of the best values in town.

Novato's kids' scene runs through the city's Parks, Recreation & Community Services department and a deep bench of independent leagues, from a youth soccer association and the South Little League to a city-run gymnastics center and a full summer of camps. It is a small enough town to feel neighborhood-led, and it shows in how quickly registration fills up when each season launches.

Novato South Little League runs youth baseball for ages 4 through 13, with T-Ball and machine pitch up through the Majors divisions. Fall Ball 2026 is wrapping up: an instructional fall season for league-age players who will be 7-12 for Spring 2027, running one game and one practice a week through early November. Spring 2027 registration opens November 1, 2026 at 8 a.m., with early-registration pricing through December 15 and the AA, AAA, and Majors window closing January 15, 2027. Volunteer coaches are the backbone of the league, and players who age out of youth baseball graduate to Novato Babe Ruth for ages 13-18.

The Novato Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) runs a fall in-house recreational league from pre-k/k through high school, with players grouped by neighborhood and school. As of late summer 2026 the fall 2026 divisions are full and the league is taking waitlist registrations only, in whatever divisions have space, on a first-come, first-served basis. The City of Novato Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is the one stop for it all: fall and winter registration is open now, including City Hoopsters youth basketball for ages 7-14, a boys youth basketball league for grades 3-8 running October through December and a girls league January through March, parent-and-child swim lessons at Hamilton Community Pool from age 6 months on up, tennis and pickleball classes, and camps every summer. The boys basketball season is underway now, and all of the department's current and winter registration lives on its recreation registration site.

Dance schools, gymnastics centers, art studios, music teachers, and scouting units across East Petaluma, West Petaluma, and Novato. Most run open enrollment at the start of the school year and again in January, and several let you try a first class before committing.

Studio C operates out of Cypress Drive and has been Petaluma's oldest school of its size, running full dance curriculum from age 2.5 to adult: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and performance groups. Swim lessons are offered year-round, with preschool 'Chicks' levels for ages 4-5 and beginner 'Peeps' levels for ages 6-12. Scouting in Petaluma is a pair of well-visited packs and troops: Scouts BSA Troop 74 and Troop 7 (boys and girls), all independently chartered, plus the all-female Troop 848. Cub Scout packs work out of several churches around town including Elim Lutheran's downtown program. Dens meet weekly in fall and winter and cluster to weekend camps, and joining a pack is as easy as emailing the Cubmaster of the unit with your child's age.

The City of Novato's own gymnastics center on 7th Street offers preschool gymnastics for ages 1-5, recreational classes for ages 5-15, and a competitive team. Session 2 Fall classes (October 26 through December 19) opened for registration on October 6, 2026, and the December Holiday Break Gymnastics Camp registers through the same portal. Open registration for Session 3 Winter 2027 classes runs Tuesday, December 8, 2026, at 6 a.m. All of it registers through the city's recreation site.

Novato's arts network covers every kid's interest: Splitz Dance Academy and Rhythms Performing Arts run the studio dance and musical theater rooms, Studio 4 Art leads small group painting and ceramics classes on 2nd Street, and Watts Music and Oneto Music School teach piano, guitar, and band instruments. Each runs open enrollment at the start of the school year and again in January, and most let you try a first class for free.
Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, and a Girl Scouts Summer Day Camp.
Scouting is alive and well organized in Novato. Cub Scout Pack 27 serves southern and central Novato for grades K-5, Pack 85 serves the same grades out of the Presbyterian Church of Novato, and Scouts BSA Troop 42 is the longtime troop in town. Girl Scouts of Northern California's North Bay service unit runs the Novato Girl Scouts Day Camp each summer, a beloved day-camp tradition with badges, scoutcraft, and outdoor games.

Tuesdays 4-8 p.m. May 5 through Sept 29, 2026, then 4-7 p.m. Oct 6-27 (final 2026 market Oct 27)
The official City of Novato market sets up on Sherman Avenue in front of City Hall, with local produce, food vendors, and a neighborhood crowd. The 2026 season wraps with its final market on Tuesday, October 27, and the market returns in the spring of 2027. It is a relaxed late-afternoon stop when it is running: kids can meet the farmers, grab a snack, and burn off energy on the lawn before heading home.
Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., year-round, rain or shine
The East Side market runs every Tuesday at Lucchesi Park (320 N. McDowell Boulevard), and it does not take a season off: rain or shine, year-round. It is the easiest midweek market with kids because the whole park is right there for after-shopping play.
Saturdays 2-5 p.m., seasonal May through November
Petaluma's Saturday market runs at Walnut Park on Fourth Street, listed on the City of Petaluma calendar. The 2 p.m. start makes it a lazy weekend outing: shop, picnic in the park, and wander downtown after.

The county's home fair, rebranded in recent years as the Petaluma Fair, turns the fairgrounds into a full summer day of livestock shows, carnival rides, fair food, concerts, and a kids' activity zone. Kids ages 3 and under get in free, and the June event also anchors the school-summer calendar for families that have gone every year.
Late winter / early spring at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds
Before the fair gates open in June, the fairgrounds hosts a standalone carnival with rides, games, kids' activities, and food trucks. It is the easy first carnival taste for little ones: shorter lines, cheaper tokens, and a walk-in crowd of local families.

Every April in historic downtown Petaluma
Petaluma's big homecoming, the Butter & Egg Days weekend packs downtown with a vintage parade, live music, food vendors, a kids' play area, and the town's favorite silly jokes and games. It is the single best day to introduce a child to the town's identity, and it's free to browse.
Year-round casual events on the west side
The Lucchesi Park Community Center and the city's west-side parks host year-round family events: movie nights, kids' arts and crafts workshops, and occasional holiday gatherings such as trunk-or-treat. The city publishes them in the Recreation activity guide rather than one press release, so the guide is the easiest way not to miss the next one.

The Children's Museum of Sonoma County at 1835 W. Steele Lane in Santa Rosa is the county's dedicated children's museum: the Science & Imagination Gallery, the Space Odyssey exhibit, and TOTopia for ages 2.5 and under. The galleries are mostly indoors, which makes it the classic rainy-day field trip.
