Healdsburg sits where the Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander valleys all meet, and its century-old plaza is the center of gravity for Sonoma County wine country. Yes, it draws visitors from around the world, but it is also a year-round town of about 12,000 people with real schools, real grocery stores, and a strong community calendar. For buyers who want small-town wine-country living, it is the market I get asked about most.
Why people love it
Healdsburg's square, ringed with restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops under century-old oaks, is the best town square in Sonoma County. The farmers market, concerts, and festivals all happen here, and it is walkable from much of the town.
Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and the Russian River Valley radiate out from the plaza, which means the tasting rooms, vineyards, and country roads of all three are minutes from downtown.
Tourism is the headline, but Healdsburg is also a functioning small town: a strong unified school district, a working community center, ball fields, a riverside park, and residents who have been here for generations.
The Russian River runs along the edge of town, with beach access, kayaking, and riverside parks within walking distance of the plaza.
