Country lanes at the foot of Sonoma Mountain
Penngrove is a small unincorporated community tucked against the west face of Sonoma Mountain, between Petaluma and Cotati. It has no city hall and no stoplights on its main street, just a general store, a pizzeria, a historic saloon, and some of the friendliest country roads in Sonoma County. For buyers who want acreage, quiet, and a real community feel without giving up the commute, this is one of the most underrated pockets I work.
Why people love it
Penngrove's main street is a short country mile: the Penngrove Market, Mama J's Pizzeria, the old Twin Oaks Roadhouse, and the Penngrove Social Firemen's community hall and park. It has the feel of a 1950s farm town that somehow got left off the map.
Most properties here sit on half-acre to multi-acre parcels with views of Sonoma Mountain, dairy pasture, and oak woodland. If you want a garden, animals, or just space between neighbors, this is the market for it.
Penngrove sits on the edge of Petaluma, about 30 to 40 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge corridor on good days, and minutes from the 101 at Cotati. Petaluma's dining, SMART rail, and services are all a short drive down Petaluma Boulevard.
The Penngrove Social Firemen, a volunteer organization dating to the town's horse-and-wagon days, owns the park and runs the calendar: crab feeds, the famous Fourth of July celebration, car shows, and a holiday light parade.

Parks & outdoor spaces
Penngrove's outdoor life is country life: the neighbors' Penngrove Park for events and baseball, Crane Creek's trails and disc golf down the road, and Sonoma Mountain's open hill country on the east side of town.

Almost everything in Penngrove is run by the Penngrove Social Firemen, who have kept the town's calendar going for more than a century. The season opens with the crab feed and peaks with the Fourth of July:
